What is a Traditional Sweat lodge?

The sweatlodge is a thousands of years old ceremony, sacred to the Native American peoples and called Inipi in the Lakota language, ned’ii in Mescallero.
The ceremony was revealed to the Western world following ancient prophecies, after years in which it was a secret from the white man.

This is a ceremony of purification and connection to Mother Earth and creation. Purification on the physical, mental and spiritual levels.

In the ceremony we will enter a small, dark domed structure, which represents the womb of Mother Earth. In the center of the structure is a “navel” pit, into which lava stones are respectfully placed, after spending a long time in the sacred fire outside the structure. Medicinal herbs are anointed on the stones and the water of life is poured.

The healing process occurs on both a global and personal level and in connection with the first four: fire, earth, air and water.

The water pourer and leader of the ceremony is Gal – she walks the red road and holds the traditions and lineages of Mescallero, Lakhota and Cheyenne.
